BUFFALO, N.Y., April 23, 2010 – Catholic Charities of Buffalo staff helped clean up the east side of Buffalo and began distributing “Healthy Lifestyles Garden Kits” to Niagara County WIC (Women, Infants and Children nutrition program) families in recognition of Earth Day 2010 yesterday.
In Buffalo, 50 volunteer staff members picked up litter and planted flower gardens around the WIC office on Genesee Street, Monsignor Carr Institute office on Rich Street and its parking lot. The effort was in cooperation with the City of Buffalo’s Keep Western New York Beautiful program and Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program which takes place annually March 1 through May 31. The “Cleanup” program provided trash bags and gloves for the project.
In addition, Niagara County WIC offices began distributing “Healthy Lifestyles Garden Kits” to WIC families with children ages 3-5. Kits included “Grow Your Own Beans” mini green house cups, “Farm to Fork” fruit and vegetable activity books and children's pails and shovels all packaged in a reusable shopping bag. The kits will encourage children to eat fruits and vegetables and promote outdoor/family activities, shopping at farmer's markets and ecology.
