Creative Edge Arts Studio provides highly effective expressive arts therapy for adults recovering from serious mental illness and/or addiction. A program of Monsignor Carr Institute, Catholic Charities’ behavioral health services division, Creative Edge has served more than 300 individuals since it began in early 2003. (Monsignor Carr Institute offers comprehensive mental health and chemical dependency services.)

“For adults recovering from mental illness and/or addiction, participation in Creative Edge has significantly decreased their anxiety and depression, increased their ability to function and decreased psychiatric hospitalizations,” said Eileen Hothow, LCAT, registered art therapist and coordinator of Creative Edge Arts Studio.

“The fact that 44 percent of our participants re-engage in the community through volunteer work, a return to school or work, or involvement in art or cultural activities is proof of Creative Edge’s effectiveness as a complementary treatment for a population that can be under-served,” Hothow added.

The program was created and developed for Catholic Charities by Hothow, who had obtained start-up funding in 2002 with a three-year grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation. The October event, planned by the program’s volunteer Advisory Board, is being held to enhance funding of the program, raise awareness and to help ensure the continuation and availability of this truly unique offering to the WNY community.

Catholic Charities is the most comprehensive direct human service provider in Western New York, serving all eight counties with 55 locations without regard to age, race or religious affiliation. Founded in 1923 as the human service arm of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, Catholic Charities also provides comprehensive counseling, services for children and families, anti-domestic violence programming, emergency assistance, and education and job training, among other social services.

Creative Edge Unveils Seasons of Healing Mural

Original Works by Creative Edge Arts Studio Participants Viewed

May 19, 2005 - About 80 people attended the unveiling of the "Seasons of Healing" wall mural by Catholic Charities' Creative Edge Arts Studio on May 18 outside the studio, Suite 412, in the Tri-Main Center, 2495 Main St., Buffalo. The unveiling was part of "Art Creating Hope," an art reception of original work by Creative Edge participants and was held in celebration of May as National Mental Health Month.

The colorful and festive four-part wall mural created by participants depicts fanciful scenes, with each of the four seasons as the background. Creative Edge participants were on hand to display their expressive art and written works, and assisted in the unveiling of the wall mural which will be hung permanently outside the fourth floor studio.

Eileen Hothow, ATR, BC, coordinator of Creative Edge Arts Studio, told those gathered, "The painting of this mural demonstrates not only the artistic ability of the individuals involved, but the successful interaction of the people to create this piece of work together. It is a testament to their ability to cooperate, generate ideas, give up ideas and risk doing something this big - and they did it!"

Creative Edge Arts Studio is an expressive arts therapy program for adults recovering from mental illness and/or addiction. A program of Monsignor Carr Institute (MCI), Catholic Charities' behavioral health services division, Creative Edge has served about 230 individuals since it began in early 2003.

Hothow acknowledged the generous support of Catholic Charities, The John R. Oishei Foundation and the 23 mental health agencies which refer clients to Creative Edge, as well as the volunteer members of the Creative Edge Advisory Board.

Dennis C. Walczyk, chief executive officer of Catholic Charities, said, "Creative Edge is an example of the innovative risks our agency is willing to take in the pursuit of meeting the needs of the individuals we serve."

In an effort to help sustain the program, a set of note cards featuring 12 different images of participants' original artwork have been produced. The cards, as well as a number of matted or framed prints of their work, were available for purchase for $10 and $20, respectively. The cards also are available at the Catholic Union Store, 795 Main St., Buffalo.

"For participants who stay in the program six months or longer, our program data has shown that depression and anxiety has reduced, levels of function have increased and re-hospitalizations have decreased," said Hothow. "Most participants report improved self-perception and self-confidence, not only in their artistic competency and achievement, but permeating their lives."

The program was developed in 2002 by Hothow, who already was employed by Catholic Charities and succeeded in obtaining a three-year grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation which ends in June.

In the first six months, Creative Edge participants are introduced to a variety of expressive art modalities and experiences, including visual, written, movement and sonic arts. A second six-month phase assists participants in further developing experience in one or two art modalities by linking them to a community-based art program, developing a portfolio and mentoring current clients.

"Our program offers an added dimension for promoting health and healing," she said. "The combination of structure with an open art studio and the use of a variety of expressive arts are significant."

A total of 23 not-for-profit mental health providers now refer potential participants to Creative Edge. Art therapist Molly Flynn, ATR, is the other instructor and member of the Creative Edge staff.
