BUFFALO, NY, March 28, 2014 - About 700 people attended the St Joseph Table, sponsored by the Frank Sclafani family of Frank's Sunny Italy restaurant in North Buffalo, which raised $5,622 in free will contributions for Catholic Charities of Buffalo. There was no charge for the annual three-generation event.
The restaurant had designated Catholic Charities of Buffalo as the recipient of all of the contributions this year. Each year, the Sclafanis choose a local charity to benefit.
The St. Joseph Table is an Italian (more specifically Sicilian) event celebrating the principal Feast Day of St. Joseph, spouse of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Every year, the Sclafani family donates the food for the meal, their family and employees volunteer their time to prepare and serve the meal.
Saint Joseph is beloved among Italian-Americans, and is the patron of workers and the protector of the family. According to legend, during a famine in Sicily many centuries ago, the townspeople prayed to St. Joseph and asked his intercession before God. Their prayers were answered and as the famine ended, a special feast of thanksgiving was held in commemoration of the Saint. Families who were wealthy prepared huge buffets, and then invited the less fortunate people of the village, especially the homeless and sick, to take part.
