BUFFALO (May 21, 2015) - Fidelis Care, the New York State Catholic Health Plan, announces the distribution of $208,000 from its Community Grant Fund to Catholic Charities of Buffalo and the Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo to support Catholic Charities' In-School Social Work program."Once again, Fidelis Care is stepping forward to assist with an identified need in our Catholic schools," said Bishop Richard J. Malone. "I am grateful for this generous donation which will have a long-term, positive impact on the lives of many of our students."
"The Catholic Charities In-School Social Work program has proven to be a proactive approach to removing non-academic barriers to success for students and addressing any negative behavior patterns in schools. Significantly, these opportunities are provided to families in some of our community's most vulnerable and economically challenged areas," said Dennis Walczyk, Catholic Charities chief executive officer. "For more than a decade, Fidelis Care has generously invested in our goal of supporting students and their families in and out of the classroom."
The In-School Social Work program provides direct character development and clinical social work services for children in six Catholic schools in the Diocese of Buffalo: Notre Dame Academy in South Buffalo; Our Lady of Black Rock and St. Joseph University, both in Buffalo; Catholic Academy in Niagara Falls; seventh and eighth grade students at Niagara Catholic High School; and St. Francis of Assisi in Tonawanda. It also provides consultation services for parents, teachers, and administrators as they work to strengthen student character.
"As a supporter of Catholic Charities In-School Social Work Program for many years, we believe in the positive impact it has on some of the most vulnerable children in the Diocese," said Rev. Patrick J. Frawley, Fidelis Care President and CEO. "We are grateful to be able to provide assistance that helps to positively impact the lives of others."
This is the 11th consecutive year
that Fidelis Care has awarded grants to non-profit organizations that share
similar missions and values of service to care for the poorest and most vulnerable
populations. The grants are made in coordination with the bishops in New York
State's eight Roman Catholic Dioceses. The local grant
is part of the $2.5 million being awarded Statewide by Fidelis Care through the
Fund this year.
